Following the release, the player-versus-environment mode was officially distinguished as "Save the World". A standalone battle royale game version, Fortnite Battle Royale, was released for the same platforms in September 2017 in associated with this change, Epic dropped the use of loot boxes, instead opting for direct purchase of cosmetics through in-game V-bucks currency.
